Since May 18th 2011 I went by the definition: Home is where the backpack is. The longer we travel though, the more it becomes obvious that at some point we will have to find ourselves a place to settle again. This sign on the highway in South Africa ignited my thoughts about where to come back to as these looked like familiar places in unfamiliar territory.

While we were travelling open-ended for the longest time, we have finally bought a ticket back home – home being in this case our family home in the South of Germany. And since we have decided on a return date, we are in a way really looking forward to coming home – even though it is a weird feeling that the traveling dream has an expiry date now.

The plan is to catch the Queen Mary 2 on one of her last transatlantic crossings this year and sail from New York to Southampton, where we will dock at the harbour on Sunday November 4. It promises to become an extravagant and lavish ride to our home continent – in the style of good old English tradition. With the Eurostar, TGV and ICE we will savour some of the best transportation experiences that Europe has to offer on our way back from London St Pancras to Ravensburg, where we will arrive on November 7.

So what’s in stock for us until then? Tomorrow we fly from Cape Town to the US, where we’ll be joined by my parents in San Francisco and do a big roadtrip together through the Southwest of the United States with a campervan. Then we’ll journey across Canada from West to East and hopefully be back to New York in time to catch the big boat home.

It will be a great finale to an amazing trip. Nevertheless I am already looking forward to put my hands on new professional challenges next year. We will see where we find our next home. Either East London, Berlin or somewhere completely different. ‚Which way is home‘ will remain a valid question for a while.

Many different countries, cities and places where ‚home‘ to me in the last decade.
